It is said that books are a portable magic. The more you read the more things you will know. The more you learn the more places you will go.
The school observed Reading Week from 24th June to 29th June, in order to motivate reading amongst students and staff.
To encourage reading, many activities were organised by students and teachers.
A reading challenge was conducted wherein students were required to read 29 books on the given topics and authors in a month's time.
To know students interest in reading and the types of books they read, and to understand their reading habits, a survey was taken for the students of classes 6 to 12. Other activities included assembly quizzes on authors, characters, genre, popular quotes etc. The students of class 6 presented book reviews while class 10 students shared what the famous personalities say about reading. Children also made creative book jackets and book marks.
A special activity in which all the members of the school, including the non-teaching staff, participated was Drop Everything and Read (DEAR). Every morning, for forty minutes, the entire school dropped all their work and read a book. Everyone participated very enthusiastically in this activity.
The Reading Week was celebrated with the same zest and fervour in the primary section too. Apart from the activities like DEAR, Bookmark and book jacket making, the students presented interesting skits and role plays. Some of the assembly activities presented by the primary schhol are as follows:
Grade 1 students summarized stories read during vacation in their own words.
Grade 2 students described the favourite character of the story they read.
Grade 3 students presented Reader’s theatre (using flash cards and hand puppets) to foster a love for reading, explore various genres and develop essential language skills.
Grade 4 students had an author’s party where they dressed up and represented themselves as their favourite authors. They talked about their famous books, characters and a little about their life stories. They encouraged peers to read their books and know more about the characters.
Grade 5 students dressed up as and emoted their favourite characters – Dora the explorer, Harry Potter, Matilda, Nancy Drew, Sophie, Amelia Jane, Charlie and the likes.
